Projects need

The purpose of the projects is to improve the deteriorating pavement and drainage structures on WIS 172, extend the roadway’s service life and upgrade other roadway deficiencies. The existing pavement is showing signs of distress including traverse cracking, the existing joints are failing, and the aggregate shoulders are low.

Proposed improvements (Project ID 1210-11-00: I-41 to Airport)

WisDOT is proposing a resurface-level improvement project on the 2.8 miles of WIS 172 between I-41 and the Airport roundabout in 2023. Improvements include:

  • Resurfacing mainline WIS 172 (concrete repairs/2.75” asphalt overlay)
  • Resurfacing the WIS 172 & I-41 interchange (concrete repairs/2.75” HMA overlay, mill 2”/2.75” HMA overlay)
  • Replacing the concrete pavement along the westbound WIS 172 ramp to southbound I-41.
  • Replacing beam guard
  • Replacing (2) cross culverts
  • Replacing curb ramps at Packerland Drive (County GE) and Babcock Road
  • Pavement markings
  • Shoulder rumble strips
  • Shoulder aggregate

Schedule

Design is currently underway with final plans expected to be complete by summer 2023. Construction is scheduled for spring/summer 2023. No real estate will be required for this project.

Traffic impacts

During mainline resurfacing, the roadway will be open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures and flagging operations. Resurfacing along the WIS 172 & I-41 interchange is anticipated to be completed with night work.

The westbound WIS 172 ramp to southbound I-41 will be closed for approximately 5-weeks while the concrete pavement is being replaced. Traffic will be detoured along northbound I-41 to Lombardi Avenue (County VK) to southbound I-41.

Proposed improvement (Project IDs 1210-17-00/1210-18-00: Airport to WIS 54)

WisDOT is proposing a resurface-level improvement project on the 2.3 miles of WIS 172 between WIS 54 and the airport in 2024. Improvements include:

  • Resurfacing mainline WIS 172 (mill and overlay)
  • Removing the steel arch culvert pipe between WIS 54 and S Overland Road and constructing a new box culvert
  • New beam guard
  • Pavement markings
  • Shoulder rumble strips
  • Shoulder aggregate

Schedule

Design is currently underway with final plans expected to be complete by summer 2023. Construction is scheduled for spring/summer 2024. No real estate will be required for this project.

Traffic impacts

WIS 172 will be closed to traffic for approximately 2 months while the culvert structure near WIS 54 is removed and replaced. WIS 172 traffic will be detoured north along Packerland Drive (County GV) to WIS 54 to WIS 172.

WIS 172 will also be closed to traffic at County GE for 1 day while the roundabout is being milled/paved. The detour will be the same as the detour above.

During mainline resurfacing, the roadway will be open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures and flagging operations.

In This Together program for businesses

WisDOT recognizes businesses located in work zones have special needs. It’s critical that customers have access to businesses and that they continue to visit them, regardless of any road work inconvenience. WisDOT's In This Together program is offered to business and community leaders as an idea source as they plan for road construction in their area. On the In This Together website, businesses can find:

  • Specially designed workbook for businesses to succeed during a highway construction project, includes information on:
    • Planning ahead
    • Staying informed
    • Keeping customers informed
    • Tips for businesses
  • Case studies that demonstrate techniques that have been successfully used in communities throughout Wisconsin.
  • Promotional samples showing a variety of examples of how businesses have promoted their businesses during construction.

During construction, temporary signing for business will be available. While signing and other marketing/advertising during the construction is up to the business, WisDOT encourages businesses to use the resources above to assist them with planning for construction before the construction begins
