WisDOT manages over 150,000 acres of land on Wisconsin roadsides. WisDOT’s natural roadsides philosophy began in the 1950s and focuses on protecting, restoring and maintaining native plants and native plant communities. Well established native plant communities help prevent the spread of invasive species. Pollinators and native plants benefit the environment and the state highway system in many ways. Seen here, a county highway worker mows alongside US 151 in Iowa County.
