Crews make a routine inspection of the Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge in August 2023. Also known as the Bong Bridge, the 11,800-foot structure connects Duluth, Minn. and Superior, Wis. via US Highway 2 over the Saint Louis Bay. The bridge, named after U.S. Army Air Corps pilot “ace” Richard Ira Bong, serves as one of three vital connectors between the cities. WisDOT has a robust bridge inspection program; crews inspect all of Wisconsin’s 14,000 bridges at least once every two years.
