Kingsley Bend Mound Repatriation

Wayside path through trees Trees and grass at wayside

Several decades ago, WisDOT took over ownership of the 40-acre Kingsley Bend Wayside on Highway 16, which originally belonged to the Ho-Chunk Nation. This site is the location of sacred burial grounds, rich prairie and plantations of tamarack and basswood, all of which are culturally and historically significant to the tribe.

Under an agreement, WisDOT transferred the land back to the Ho-Chunk Nation in a special ceremony on June 4, 2007, so that the tribe could restore the land to its original pre-settlement landscape.
