Pavement, culvert improvement project on WIS 48 to start

Work includes adding rumble strips, widening shoulders to reduce crashes

Release date: May 31, 2024

To invest in Wisconsin's transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $5.97 million contract with prime contractor Monarch Paving Co. of Amery for a resurfacing project on WIS 48 from County P (1st Avenue) in Cumberland east to WIS 25 west of Rice Lake. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, June 10.

The existing pavement is showing signs of deterioration. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation project will:

  • Remove a portion of the existing pavement and place new asphalt.
  • Replace deteriorated sections of curb and gutter.
  • Complete maintenance work on culverts, including repairing separated joints, replacing detached or corroded apron end walls, lining pipes, placing riprap, performing ditching and grubbing near culvert ends, adding culvert markers and replacing all four wing walls of the Hickey Creek box culvert.
  • Replace guardrail.

To address run-off-the-road crashes, the project also will:

  • Add centerline and shoulder rumble strips where appropriate.
  • Widen the existing three-foot paved shoulders to five feet.

During construction, WIS 48 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures controlled by flagging.

Construction is scheduled for completion in early October.
