Governor Evers approves US 12/WIS 27 culvert replacement project

Project to replace two structures south of Jackson County village of Merrillan

Release date: July 3, 2024

To invest in Wisconsin's transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $665,537 contract with prime contractor Badger Environmental & Earthworks of Westby for a culvert replacement project on US 12/WIS 27 south of Merrillan in Jackson County. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, July 8.

Built in 1930, the structures have reached the end of their services lives. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation project will:

  • Replace the existing culverts.
  • Replace the roadway pavement over the culvert replacement locations.
  • Replace guardrail.
  • Regrade shoulders.

During construction, US 12/WIS 27 will be closed to through traffic at the location of each culvert. The northern culvert is located 0.33 mile south of the northern intersection of Castle Hill Road at US 12/WIS 27, and the southern culvert is located 0.11 mile south of the US 12/WIS 27 intersection at Gilbert Road.

The contractor plans to replace the northern culvert first. Once the culvert is replaced, that piece of US 12 will open to traffic, but the roadway will remain gravel until after the completion of the second culvert replacement, and then the roadway at both sites will be paved. Local traffic can use side roads to get around culvert replacement locations.

Through traffic will be detoured via I-94 and WIS 95.
