Black River Bridge closure on WIS 64 west of Medford pushed back

Taylor County bridge rehabilitation project includes deck replacement, other repairs

Release date: July 8, 2024

The closure of the bridge carrying WIS 64 over the Black River west of the Taylor County city of Medford has been pushed back to July 15 because of weather-related delays.

Because the existing bridge deck is showing signs of deterioration, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans to:

  • Replace the bridge deck.
  • Replace the WIS 64 pavement on both sides of the structure.
  • Clean and paint bearings.
  • Complete spot painting of girders.
  • Add new expansion joints and drains.
  • Replace guardrail.
  • Place pavement markings and signs.

During construction, WIS 64 will be closed to through traffic between Wren Road and the north leg of County E, all west of Medford. Initially, through traffic will be detoured via WIS 64, County O and WIS 13. Once work at a rail crossing on WIS 64 in the city of Medford is complete later this month, through traffic will be detoured via WIS 64, County O and County Q.

Construction is scheduled for completion in September.
