NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region announces a live, online public involvement meeting (PIM) for proposed improvements to the Main Street Bridge (US 45) over the Fox River in the city of Oshkosh, Winnebago County. This meeting will be held via Microsoft Teams and accessed via the link below.

Project engineers will share maps, displays, and exhibits via a live presentation. Information for businesses impacted by road construction will also be included in the presentation. A comment, question, and answer period will follow the live presentation. You can also listen to the project presentation via audio-only on a calling device if you prefer.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is in the process of developing plans for proposed improvements on the Main Street Bridge on US 45 over the Fox River in the city of Oshkosh, Winnebago County. The purpose of this website is to provide information regarding the proposed improvements, describe the potential impacts it would have on the community, and offer an opportunity for public comment.

Project purpose and need

The structure is safe for vehicle and pedestrian crossing. The purpose of the project is to preserve the operation of the structural, mechanical, and electrical components of the US 45 Main Street Bridge.

The existing structure and its mechanical and electrical elements have received various repairs and maintenance over its lifespan, but the structure has become deficient due to varying levels of deterioration. Many of the elements are deteriorated or have exhausted their useful service life. These include structural, mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components.

Anticipated Benefits

The following anticipated benefits are expected following the project’s completion:

  • Decreased maintenance costs associated with the structure
  • Improved operation of the movable span
  • Extending the life of the existing structure by replacing deteriorated and worn-out components

Proposed improvements

Proposed improvements include:

  • Rehabilitate existing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and structural components of the bascule span
  • Minor repairs to the operator’s house and access platforms
  • Scarification (removal) and overlay of the approach span concrete deck
  • Removal and replacement of the steel grid deck on the movable span.

Traffic impacts

The bridge will be CLOSED during construction

  • Vehicle detour: The detour is shown as the solid orange line in the image below and utilizes 9th Avenue, Oregon Street, and Jackson Street.
  • Pedestrian detour: Uses sidewalks along 6th Avenue, Oregon Street, Jackson Street, Division Street, Pearl Avenue, and Main Street.

Schedule

The final design is expected in 2024. Construction will begin in the fall of 2025 and conclude in the spring of 2026
