WIS 57 Improvements - Sheboygan County

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region is in the process of developing plans for proposed improvements on WIS 57 in Sheboygan County. This website provides information regarding the proposed improvements, describes the potential impacts it would have on the community, and offers an opportunity for public comment.

Project location

15.9 miles of WIS 57 from just north of the Clearview Road intersection near Waldo to just south of the WIS 32/57 intersection at the north Sheboygan County line near Millhome.

Purpose and need

Higher than average crash rates and/or operational deficiencies exist at four intersections. The intersections are WIS 57 at WIS 28, County U, County C, and County J. WisDOT proposes the improvement alternatives below as a safety upgrade to each intersection.

The existing pavement is showing signs of deterioration including longitudinal and transverse cracking in the concrete and asphalt pavement. The pavement surface has reached the end of its useful life and should be repaired to preserve the integrity of the riding surface and base and decrease future maintenance costs.

The existing beamguard does not meet current standards and should be replaced. Culverts along the length of the project are also in need of repair or replacement.

Proposed improvements

The proposed improvements are currently in the preliminary design phase. We appreciate your comments on the improvements. Proposed improvements include:

  • Repair cracked panels and faulted joints of the concrete pavement
  • Mill 2.5 inches of existing surface and pave 2.5 inches of hot mix asphalt
  • Create Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) at County U and WIS 57 intersection

Anticipated benefits

The project will improve the operations and safety of drivers at intersections, provide motorists with a smoother riding surface resulting in less wear on vehicles, extend the life of pavement, and decrease future maintenance costs.

Traffic impacts

WIS 57 will remain open to traffic during mainline paving operations using lane closures and flagging operations.

WIS 57 will be closed and detoured for intersection improvements at County U, County J. The closure timeframe(s) and detour routes have not been determined to date.

Schedule

  • Environmental Document: Spring 2023
  • Second Public Involvement Meeting: Spring 2024
  • Project design: 2022-2027
  • Final Design: Summer 2026
  • Construction currently scheduled in 2028
    • Could be advanced to 2027 if funding becomes available

Real estate

FEE/TLE would be required for intersection improvements at WIS 28, County U, and County J. Detailed real estate needs will not be known until a preferred alternative is selected.

Business Resource: WisDOT’s In This Together program

WisDOT recognizes businesses located in work zones or impacted by detour routes have special needs. WisDOT's In This Together website is offered to businesses, organizations, and community leaders as an idea source as they plan for road construction in their area. It includes promotional examples, case studies and a specially designed Business Coordination Guide with information on:

  • Planning ahead
  • Staying informed
  • Keeping customers informed
  • Tips for businesses
  • Temporary business signing
