WIS 76/Larsen Road - Winnebago County intersection

Project update (December 2022)

Based on an overall assessment of our improvement alternatives that included public feedback, WisDOT is moving forward with a single-lane roundabout at the WIS 76 & Larsen Road intersection as our preferred alternative.

Project Location

This project is located at the intersection of WIS 76 and Larsen Road, 2.2 miles south of US 10, in the town of Clayton, Winnebago County.

Project need/purpose

The purpose of the proposed action is to improve safety at the intersection of WIS 76 and Larsen Road while providing acceptable traffic operations.

The need for the proposed improvement is to reduce the number and severity of crashes at the intersection, particularly right-angle type crashes, and to improve the traffic operations of the intersection. The intersection of WIS 76 and Larsen Road had sixteen crashes from 2016 to 2020, resulting in one fatal crash and nine injury type crashes. Of the sixteen crashes, twelve were right angle crashes. In addition, the new Neenah High School located approximately 1-mile east of the intersection is expected to increase traffic at the intersection.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is proposing to reconstruct the intersection of WIS 76 and Larsen Road in the Town of Clayton, Winnebago County. The following is a summary of improvement alternatives being considered:

All-Way Stop Control

This alternative consists of reconstructing the WIS 76 and Larsen Road intersection to include left turn lanes on the northbound and southbound WIS 76 approaches and removing the right turn lane on the east leg of Larsen Road. Stop signs would be added to the WIS 76 approaches to create an all-way stop control intersection. With the addition of left turn lanes and stop signs on WIS 76 the severity of crashes at the intersection are expected to decrease, however this alternative is expected to result in higher levels of traffic delays on WIS 76.

Roundabout - Preferred alternative

This alternative includes a single lane roundabout located at the existing WIS 76 and Larsen Road intersection. The roundabout would decrease speeds through the intersection and eliminate right angle crashes within the intersection, which is predicted to reduce the number of severe crashes at the intersection.  Traffic operations are expected to be better than the all-way stop alternative.
