Project overview

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is in the process of developing plans to replace the pavement on WIS 16 from East Main Street to just 0.23 miles east of the intersection of WIS 16 and Rock River Road west of Oconomowoc (8.85 miles). This includes the WIS 16/WIS 19 ramps from East Gate Drive to WIS 16.

The existing intersection of WIS 16 and East Main Street is a semi-urban intersection under two-way stop control. This intersection was flagged as having a significant number of crashes compared to similar intersections statewide. The intersection has a skew of 20 degrees and no left turn lanes exist. The relatively high average daily traffic (ADT) and intersection skew seem to be generating both failure to yield and failure to stop crashes. A roundabout is being proposed to address these safety issues.

The existing pavement shows signs of extensive cracking and poor ride quality. If not replaced in a timely manner, the pavement structure will continue to deteriorate leading the ride quality to continue to worsen and safety be reduced. The existing concrete pavement was overlaid with 4-inches of asphalt in 1982. In 2001, 3.5-inches of the asphalt overlay was milled and relayed.

Improvements include:

• Replacement of the existing pavement and base material
• Upgrade of guardrail
• Bridge deck surface repairs
• Installation of a roundabout at the intersection of East Main Street and WIS 16
• Mill and overlay of the roundabout at the intersection of WIS 16 and County F (American St) in Ixonia

Traffic impacts/detours

WIS 16 will be closed and traffic will be detoured via WIS 26, I-94 and WIS 67.
