US 8 and US 141 Resurfacing

UPDATE as of May 2022 - Project construction has been advanced and is now scheduled for 2023!

For 2023 project construction schedule, traffic impacts and current construction operations, please see US 141 construction webpage on 511 Wisconsin.

Project Locations

There are two projects scheduled. Each project is noted by a unique project ID.

  • Project ID 9560-06-00: US 8 from just south of County R near Pembine to the Michigan State Line in Marinette County. The project is split into two portions:
    • US 8 north-south segment that runs contiguous with US 141 for approximately 8.2 miles.
    • US 8 east-west segments with a length of approximately 2.1 miles.
    • View project location/limits in map
  • Project ID 1491-23-00: 1.4 miles of US 141 from the intersection of US 8 to Betters Court in
  • the city of Niagara, Marinette County.

US 8 Project: Pembine – Michigan State Line (Project ID: 9560-06-00)

Project need

The existing pavement is showing signs of deterioration including longitudinal and transverse cracking. The pavement on the north-south segment experiences tenting during the winter months, resulting in a rough-riding roadway. The pavement surface has reached the end of its useful life and should be repaired in order to preserve the integrity of the riding surface and the underlying base. The existing beam guard system does not meet current standards and should be replaced.

Proposed improvements

This is a resurfacing-level improvement to extend the service life of the highway and improve the riding surface of US 8.

  • US 8 north-south segment includes:
    • Milling two inches of the existing asphalt surface and place an asphaltic underseal on the milled surface to help prevent winter tenting issues. Crews will then pave two inches of hot mix asphalt.
    • Widening the existing 3-foot paved shoulder to a 5-foot paved shoulder
    • Replace beam guard
    • Centerline and shoulder rumble strips
    • Pavement marking
  • US 8 east-west segment include:
    • Milling two inches of the existing asphalt and paving of inches hot mix asphalt
    • Widening the existing 3-foot paved shoulder to a 5-foot shoulder
    • Replacing beam guard
      • Flattening slopes north of the intersection of US 8 with Geldmeyer Road/Old US 8. The beamguard layout will be modified north of US 8
      • Beamguard will be eliminated at Geldmeyer Road
    • Culvert rehabilitation

    • Two lanes of traffic will be maintained when no construction work is taking place.

Right-of-way impacts/real estate

  • No right of way is anticipated as part of the project.

In This Together program for businesses

WisDOT recognizes businesses located in work zones have special needs. WisDOT's In This Together program is offered to business and community leaders as an idea source as they plan for road construction in their area. It includes promotional examples, case studies and a specially designed Business Coordination Guide with information on:

Project handouts

WisDOT has created a public handout for both projects. Please feel free to download, print and share with anyone who does not have access to this website.
