Project overview
In providing access to neighborhoods, manufacturers, commuters and tourists within the Milwaukee metropolitan area, and connecting Milwaukee to other areas including northern Illinois and Green Bay, I-43 is a critical interstate link not only for Southeast Wisconsin, but the entire state. The corridor connects access points throughout the city, serves as a gateway to popular tourist locations, and links major industrial centers throughout the region.
Today, I-43 carries nearly 160,000 vehicles each day through the project area. Traffic is projected to grow another 15 percent over the next thirty years.
The pavement and bridges in the project corridor, from Brown Street to Capitol Drive, need major rehabilitation or replacement. All planned and recommended modifications will stay within the existing freeway right of way.
Project purpose
- Built between 1963 and 1967
- Address deteriorating bridge and pavement conditions
- Address the most critical needs
- Improve operations to maintain safe and efficient vehicular movement along the corridor
- Bridges to be rehabilitated:
- Burleigh Street
- Locust Street
- Center Street
- Wright Street
- Brown Street
- (Note: North Avenue, Halyard Street, Ring Street, Keefe Avenue, Atkinson Avenue, Vienna Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and Capitol Drive will be considered separately)
